Launch Pad (Formally Hull High Fliers)

Who we are

Launchpad is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) whose aim is to provide gymnastics and trampolining opportunities for all. We have approximately 150 members and nine qualified coaches. We pride ourselves at being fully inclusive with classes for preschool, juniors, teenagers, adults, disabilities, freestyle and DMT. We have classes 6 days a week. We recently changed our legal status and put a robust business plan in place with the intention of moving into our own home.

Our Approach to Volunteering

Our club's ethos is that you can never have too many volunteers. And there is always a constant need to make sure that you recruit and retain volunteers as people will always have demands on their time and need to leave or will go off to University or get a new job which means the club lose a valuable part of the volunteer workforce. The challenge every club faces is to find out who the next volunteer will be and get them involved without scaring them off in the first place.

Planning Ahead

As a club, we try and plan ahead to make sure that we always have a surplus of volunteers. For key officer roles (e.g. welfare officer) we place an assistant volunteer to learn the ropes and support the named officer so that should we lose the officer we have a natural successor sat in the wings ready to take over. For example, the club is on our third welfare officer which each time has been a parent. We recognised that there is a risk that their child may decide to leave the club and that this role being vacant could cause us an issue to our club retaining both our club Mark accreditation and our British Gymnastics registration. We therefore each time identified other people who had a safeguarding qualification and sent them on a time to listen course so that they could be assistant welfare officers. This has enabled us to create a stable and seamless transfer of the welfare officer role

The Future

For the future, our plan is to move into our own venue so that we can provide more opportunities for people to participate in gymnastics. We will need even more volunteers to able to do this! We are getting involved with Active Humber's Raising Aspirations Mentoring Programme (RAMP) and will be looking to take on work experience and traineeships to find someone who would like an apprenticeship with Launchpad.
