Assistant Netball Coach

Tell me a bit about your coaching role(s)?
Assistant coach for an U12 team. I coach once a week in the evenings and also attend their games at the weekend alongside the lead coach.

Why do you coach?
I coach because I have always loved netball and wanted to pass on my enthusiasm of the game to younger girls. Netball had a big influence on my life growing up and I wanted to enable girls to have the same positive experience I had.

What have you gained from doing this?
I have gained an understanding about what young girls enjoy most about playing netball and what methods/approaches are effective at teaching them skills. It has taught me how to better engage with young people and adapt coaching styles for different people. I have also learned how to communicate with young people - choosing teams etc. and ensuring no one is upset at the end of the day if they don't get picked!

What would you say to someone who's thinking of getting into coaching?
It is a very rewarding experience coaching! I would recommend anyone that has a love for the game to get in to it if they have the time and they want to keep young girls enthused in the sport. It does take up time and, depending on age group and ability, patience is definitely required.
